Pride matters because there was a time — and in many places, there still is — when simply being LGBTQ+ could cost someone their safety, dignity, or even their life.
Gordon Chad was not a headline. He was a 28-year-old college student, a son, and a friend. He stopped at a convenience store before a Thanksgiving gathering and never made it there. After two men learned he was gay, he was kidnapped, tortured, beaten, sexually assaulted, and ultimately murdered before being buried in a shallow grave.
Stories like his are why Pride exists.
Pride is more than parades and rainbow flags. It is remembrance. It is visibility. It is a declaration that LGBTQ+ lives have value, deserve protection, and will not be erased by hatred or violence. Pride gives a voice to those who were silenced, honors those we have lost, and reminds the world that no one should have to live in fear for simply being who they are.
For the LGBTQ+ community, Pride is about survival, unity, chosen family, and the continued fight for equality, dignity, and love without fear.
NEVER give up the fight.
