lady in particular who helped pave the way for what they are doing today. Her name was Betty Wilson Daws, Kristin and Blake’s grandmother, but her family affectionately called her Mama D. Her story is one that is with us everyday. majored in Business at North Texas State College and when she went into her first business class the professor asked, “Miss Wilson why are you here?” She told him she was there to take a business course required for her major. He proceeded to tell her women did not belong business and that she would not pass his class. She took the class anyway and true to his word he failed her. The next semester she stubbornly returned to his class and once again he informed her that women did not belong in business. She said that she had to take his class for her major and that she would be staying. Much to his chagrin he said she could stay but would earn nothing more than a C. With that she attended each class and worked as hard as her classmates and at the end of the semester accepted her C and continued on to graduate with a degree in Business. was never one to shy away from a challenge. You can call it sheer determination or a stubborn nature, but when she set her mind on something she conquered it with grace and style. When she and Papa D. married, Papa D. was finishing school on the GI Bill and Mama D. continued to work in Dallas. Each day she dressed up and trekked almost a mile in her high heels to the bus stop to catch the bus downtown where she worked for an insurance company. Once she found out she was expecting her first child she began working as a secretary to the dean at North Texas. This worked out well for Mama D. because after baby Bill was born the mother of the dean kept him while they worked and completed school. After Papa D. finished school he began looking for a teaching job. As it turned out, teachers in New Mexico made double the salary of teachers in Texas. They quickly made the decision to move their small family to Lovington, NM in order to reap the benefits of the $4000 per year teaching salary. found a job at an insurance company but soon realized that her true calling was also education, and of course who could turn down $4000 a year! She started working towards her teaching certificate at Eastern New Mexico State and upon completion began teaching high school English. She found a long and fulfilling career as and English teacher where she had the opportunity to nurture and mentor thousands of young people in her classroom, including her two children! We tell you this story because this woman was not only incredibly special to both of us but also a role model for us as women starting our own business. She gave us a tremendous appreciation for the struggles she faced, and the path she paved so that we can live our dream....
