Let me tell you all a story about a woman in the airport.

My mom and I stopped to eat in an airport restaurant on our way back from Costa Rica. After we ordered we noticed that the woman who took our order was looking at us. We did that whole awkward I-look-at-you-then-you-look-away-and-pretend-you-aren't-looking-at-me thing five or six times. I must admit I was a little nervous about her (and our food!).

We received our food and ate it (nervously). Right before I was about to pick up our plates to leave, I saw this same woman slip out from behind the counter and come over to our table. She started picking up our plates (this wasn't a restaurant where she needed to do that so it was a bit out of the ordinary).

But then I found out why...

As she picked up our plates, she casually mentioned that I had ordered our food in Spanish, but based on my physical appearance she assumed that I also spoke English. Then, she got out a notepad and asked me to write down the translation for "cebollas encurtidas" (pickled onions). Then, she asked for three more phrases she needed to do her job better.

I told her that I noticed her looking at us and I know it took a lot of courage to come over and ask for help with her English.

What she told me in response totally BLEW ME AWAY...

She paused and then looked right at me and said: "I am forty years old and I have spent my whole life "hoping" to learn English. But hope doesn't work. I took this job at the airport specifically to better my English. I have spent my whole life not asking for things because I was worried what other people will think, but that never got me far. If I want to go farther, I have to be brave."

Wow.
