The Four Noble Truths of Travel A journalist and food writer provides a summer sojourn-inflected take on the Buddha’s foundational teachings.
Over the past four days on our Laos extension, we’ve had the privilege of experiencing the remarkable culture of Luang Prabang–a UNESCO World Heritage city where ancient traditions remain deeply woven into everyday life.
We rose before dawn to offer alms to the monks, discovered the morning market, cruised down the Mekong River from the sacred Pak Ou Caves, explored the National Museum, wandered through beautiful temples including Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Wisunarat, and spent evenings browsing the vibrant night market.
One of the highlights was being welcomed into a local family’s home for a traditional Baci ceremony, a beautiful Lao ritual celebrating community, blessing, and well-being. We also learned to prepare traditional Lao dishes during a cooking class, sharing part of our meal with the monks before sitting down to enjoy it ourselves.
Our time concluded with a visit to the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls and the nearby bear rescue center–a fitting reminder that compassion extends not only to one another, but to all living beings.
