O Figs

Fig "Brozhiotto Nero" is a magnificent self-fertile fig variety of Italian selection. The fig variety is early ripening and produces two harvests, the first in August, the second in September. The variety is productive, the weight of the fruits of the first harvest reaches 80 - 90 g, with the second harvest the fruits are already smaller - 70-75 g. The fruit is pear-shaped, dark purple in color. The pulp is sweet, very juicy, tasty, with a rich aroma. The variety requires shelter for the winter. Suitable for growing both in open ground and in pots. If you decide to grow the plant in a pot, its height will reach 1.8–2.0 meters, but at the same time it will actively bloom and bear fruit. If you plant the plant in open ground, its height will reach 4 meters. Don't forget that figs love sunny, windless places.

Dwarf fig "Little Miss Figgy" is a new remontant variety. In addition to tasty fruits, it also has a very decorative appearance. A bush with slow growing vigor, an adult plant reaches a height of 70-90 cm with a spreading crown up to 70 cm in diameter. The foliage is dark green, with deep lobes and short internodes. Fruiting is abundant in several waves: the first in spring, the second in autumn. The fruits are small, purple-burgundy, sweet with a pleasant aroma. Suitable for growing in pots on the terrace or balcony. Frost resistance down to -15ºC.

The name “ficus” came into Russian in the 18th century and was already slightly modified - “fig”, hence “fig tree”. This plant had other names in Rus' - fig tree, fig tree, wine berry, Smyrna berry.

The name “blue fig” may refer to the fruits of a completely different plant, named by analogy, not even related. This is a marbled tree native to Australia and has no relation to the true fig.

In the biblical book of Genesis, the fig leaf was used by Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness. In addition to the Book of Genesis, the fig tree is mentioned many times in the Old and New Testaments. One of the parables of Jesus Christ is the Parable of the barren fig tree in the vineyard, which for the third year did not bear fruit and the owner of the vineyard already wanted to cut it down. The biblical fig tree - sycamore, sycamore tree - grew mainly on the plains of the sea coast or in the hot Jordan Valley.

The wild fig tree, the ruminal fig tree, had religious and mythological significance in ancient Rome; it was revered as the male counterpart of the cultivated fig tree, which was considered a feminine symbol. In order to obtain figs, wild fig branches were hung from the branches of a cultivated fig tree; this operation was known as “caprification” (lat. caprificatio), it is mentioned by Pliny and Theophrastus.

The Koran also contains a surah called “The Fig Tree” (At-Tin).

Widely distributed in the Mediterranean countries, in the Transcaucasus, on the southern coast of Crimea, in the Carpathians, on the Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar Territory, in Central Asia, on the Iranian Plateau.

Figs are one of the most ancient cultivated plants, presumably the oldest. Cultivated figs were first grown in Arabia, from where they were adopted by Phenicia, Syria and Egypt. In the 13th century BC. e. played an important role in the agriculture of the kingdom of Pylos. It came to America only at the end of the 16th century.

Fig, or fig, or fig tree, or common fig tree, or fig, is a subtropical deciduous plant of the genus Ficus of the Mulberry family. The Carian ficus is named after the place that is considered the birthplace of figs - the mountainous region of ancient Caria, a province of Asia Minor.
