I don’t usually talk about my faith on this page. I think by now enough people know my heart to know I’m a “serve all, love all” person, and it’s deeply important to me that every family and every story feels welcome here.

But as I edited these images, I realized leaving out the deeper meaning behind this trip would feel incomplete. This experience was so much more than a vacation.

I’ve always felt this sense of protection I couldn’t fully explain. And being with Zach, that’s been elevated tenfold. There have been too many moments in our relationship where things aligned a little too perfectly to be random. Too many “coincidences,” too much protection to chalk it all up to good luck.

And this trip to Tanzania framed that in a way I still am struggling to put into words.

We landed in the country only to learn we’d arrived in the middle of a “conflict zone.” Historic protests and the government's response had begun hours after we left home, events that have frankly yet to be fully covered in the news. I'm honestly still not sure why our plane even landed.

Then the government shut down the internet, leaving us in the dark. My sister managed to get what limited information she could and encouraged us to stick to our plan away from the cities.

There was nothing to do but acknowledge how little control we had and trust that we were being carried through by something bigger than us.

And looking back, I can’t shake the feeling that God had His hand over every step we took. Nothing about this trip was accidental.

Divine timing so that we were shielded from the unrest. The right people placed as our guides. Even the timing of each of our flights in and out of the country.

His protection was all over it, and I’m walking into this season with a deeper trust in the God who goes before us.

As I look back at these moments that we thankfully were able to enjoy after the initial shock, I’m reminded why I pick up my camera. Photography and filmmaking let me hold onto the ways God moves through our lives: the vastness of creation, the people we love, and the fleeting stories being written right in front of us. It lets me create something lasting in a world that can change in an instant.

And while I’m grateful for the protection we experienced, my heart is also with the people of Tanzania. I’m praying for their safety, for peace to be restored, and for stability to return to a place filled with so much beauty, resilience, and amazing people.

This Thanksgiving, I’m especially grateful for God’s protection, seen and unseen, for the peace that comes from trusting Him even when the path feels uncertain, and for knowing we’re never walking alone.
