No child should miss a meal due to lunch debt. Join us to ensure every student has access to a worry-free lunch 🍎

We are ending the school year with grateful hearts and a meaningful milestone.

School Lunch Angels recently paid off $4,791.30 in end-of-year school lunch debt for Harris County students. Because of the generosity of our donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community supporters, families can head into summer with one less burden on their shoulders.

This brings our total giving for the year to $12,838.49 in school lunch debt relief and hardship assistance for students and families throughout Harris County.

At School Lunch Angels, our mission is to lift the burden of school lunch debt from families and work hand-in-hand with our schools to make lunch something every child can look forward to. Every dollar given helps ensure that students have access to nourishing, worry-free meals and that families feel supported by their community.

We are so thankful for everyone who has helped make this possible.

If this mission resonates with you, we would love to have you join us. We are looking for volunteers who can help with fundraising efforts, community outreach, and future events so we can continue supporting students and families across Harris County.

A legacy is not measured by what we leave behind for ourselves, but by the lives we continue to touch long after we are gone.

Recently, the family of Teddy “Ray” Phillips joined School Lunch Angels at New Mountain Hill Elementary to present a donation made in his memory. Together, family, friends, and community members raised $750 to help support students at the school that held such a special place in Ray’s heart, with $366.10 immediately clearing the current accumulated lunch debts.

For nearly 10 years, Ray served the Harris County School District as a school bus driver, faithfully caring for students at New Mountain Hill Elementary. What many people did not know until near the end of his life was that Ray quietly paid off school lunch debts for students in need, asking for no recognition and expecting nothing in return.

His generosity was rooted in his own humble beginnings and his belief that every child deserved care, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive. That commitment to children remains deeply personal to his family, as his grandchildren continue to attend New Mountain Hill Elementary today.

The funds donated in Ray’s memory will remain designated for New Mountain Hill Elementary and will be used as needs arise, ensuring that his spirit of compassion continues to bless students for years to come.

We are honored to help carry forward Ray’s legacy and grateful to his family for allowing us to be part of this meaningful tribute. Through every meal provided and every burden lifted, his kindness lives on.

đź’› Thank you to everyone who contributed to this special gift in memory of Ray Phillips.

One in three Georgia parents report that their families experience low or very low food security, according to new data from Emory University’s Center for Child Health Policy.

A few findings:

• Food insecurity is higher in rural areas: 43% of parents in rural areas reported low or very low food security, compared to 31% in urban and suburban areas.

• Parents are cutting back: About one-quarter of the parents polled said they have cut or skipped meals in the past year because there wasn’t enough money for food. That increased to 44% for low-income parents.

• About a quarter of the parents polled said their families had received benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Of those parents, more than half (52%) said they had lost access at some point within the past year.

• Most of the parents polled support free breakfast and lunch for all children in public schools. Six percent said they are carrying school lunch debt, with a median of $25 owed. A quarter of those families said they owed $100 or more.

We can help bridge that gap for families that struggle with lunch debt. Join our mission today and help make a difference for Harris County students and families.

🎉 Congratulations to Chloe Williams, the recipient of the very first School Lunch Angels $1,000 Scholarship! 🎉

This year, we received 15 incredible scholarship applications from students across Harris County, and we were deeply inspired by each and every one of them. Choosing just one recipient was no easy task.

Chloe stood out for her heart for service, her passion for helping others, and her powerful understanding of the connection between nutrition, health, and student success.

In her essay, Chloe wrote:

“Not having consistent access to things like food doesn’t disappear when the school day begins—it follows students into their ability to focus, participate, and succeed.”

Those words beautifully reflect the mission of School Lunch Angels and the reason we do this work every day.

Chloe plans to pursue a future in medicine and is committed to building healthier communities through compassion and service. We are honored to support her journey and cannot wait to see the impact she will make in the world.

Congratulations again, Chloe! 💛🖤
