As a songwriter, I sometimes enter the rehearsal space with the intention of finishing this or refining that when inspiration strikes on something new. Maybe a lot of creatives suffer this sort of ADHD. If I'm lucky, the new song will emerge fully formed. One year ago this week, it was 'Miss July' which hijacked the writing session. A not wistful rumination on a few memoir-worthy summer nights. Le sigh.
Still, 'the best song you ever wrote' is almost always the newest one, and 'Miss July' was quickly relegated to the notebook (and my memory), supplanted by new originals and the requisite covers. Lately, I have revisited this one.

Mark Wagner and I playing 'Escape Velocity' last weekend. The phone mic somehow didn't hear the guitar as loud as it was in person, but it lets MW's ace bass line shine through.
The song is an original and I'm still in love with it.

Anybody else micro-analyze every.single.note you played or sang after the performance has ended?

Instrument theft happens and it's an unforgivable sin! Over the years I've heard of thieves making off with many of my inspirations' instruments. Marty Willson-Piper's beloved Rickenbacker has never been recovered. A whole trailer of Frank Black's gear went missing. In this case, the instruments were stolen from Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson and their auxiliary player Paul Moak. Paul played on Over the Rhine's stunning 'Ohio' double album and played with them on the subsequent tour (where he dazzled).

In the case of Heart, it seems one instrument has neen recovered. The thief took Nancy's one-off custom shop baritone Telecaster and Paul 1966 Gibson mandolin (which he's owned for 25+ years).

The judge should order the thief to serious punishment. I suggest a cheap pawn shop acoustic be forcefully and dynamically inserted into his arse -up to the 12th fret!

As a guitarist, my core acoustic sound is in super-jumbo and 17" archtop models. I want to add a dreadnought to the fold eventually and will likely choose an Alvarez. The Gibson Hummingbird is arguably one of the most iconic dreads of all time, but that heinous pickguard will prevent me from ever investing. What a godawful shape and graphic! Tackler than a Nudie Suit and stinking of flea market polyester, this scratchplate is awful. It has the same aesthetic stink as the f-holes on that Taylor electric. 🤮
please produce an H-Bird model without this garish eyesore of a scratchplate.
