lotus child, 2025
oil on canvas 24x24in.
This painting, the first of a two-part series, reflects my identity, rooted in the image of me as a child. Lying within the petals of a lotus flower, I represent peace, innocence, and curiosity through the surroundings of the cultures that shaped me. The lotus symbolizes growth and rebirth and mirrors a self-reflection of who I am. It intersects with a sentimental memory of matching tattoos with my mom that I got when I first started my undergrad. As I finish up the last few weeks of my undergrad, I present these lotuses on canvas, which are dedicated to my practice! The blue patterns and koi fish around me are drawn from the traditions of my heritage, echoing the beauty and strength of the cultures I come from. Through this piece, I’m exploring how identity begins forming early—shaped by family, memory, and tradition—and how those layers continue to bloom within me

as a kid, mourning is connected with confusion when feelings are expressed without reason. The fish in my hand represents loss, although I didn't understand its meaning then. Death felt even more strange to me because of the overwhelming feelings of others, like a void weighing down on me. Grief carries memories but is fragile enough to break under its weight, much like porcelain.
These patterns, which remind me of things I used to see around the house as a kid, embodies the scene and intersect together cultural tradition, memory, and the lingering feeling of loss.
