Friday 9/27: Today we completed our adventure returning to the van after a quick pack up and hike. Now it’s time to drive back to town where the luxuries and conveniences of modern life await. But this week in the backcountry was special, it opened our eyes to what lies within. It renewed our gratitude for what we have at home and it forged friendships that have a special bond that no one else will ever understand. The struggles were as great as the triumphs which helped add more color to our character, the teamwork made it possible, and this is what is was about all along.

Monday 6/23: Waking up early meant it was too cool for the mosquitos and we enjoyed the relief! Before we could head to the trailhead we needed to sort and pack all of our gear and food we would need for the week. But we made quick work of this task before we eagerly set out to the East Marvine TH.

Sometimes it takes awhile to get out of town and into the perfect corner of wilderness. 6 hours of total driving got us to right where we needed to be. We parked at the trailhead and assessed the map to choose which direction we would hike the loop. We decided to go counterclockwise to attack the steep uphill first and leave the prized Marvine Lakes for the tail end of our trip. Luckily even this side of the loop presented spectacular views. As we passed one flooded meadow we spotted a dam and soon a beaver was swimming across the pond to return home. We pressed on past a few more lakes aiming particularly for Mary’s Loch Lake. But unfortunately after a demanding uphill we realized that our sights were set on a rather precarious trail. It was hardly used and hard to follow so we reluctantly decided to retreat to a meadow that meant we had to retrace our footsteps and add extra miles to our days trek. As soon as we arrived in our camping spot for the night, a few of us immediately ran and jumped in the lake, looking for a refreshing rinse after such a hot and uphill day. Our feet punched into the water to find many feet of algae and loose muck only a few feet below the surface. Unfortunately, we ended up a bit more dirty than we had started, but we were still happy and refreshed to rinse the heat from the day and to finally be at camp! In the end it was worth having a cozy meadow to call home for the night.
