Born into slavery in rural Franklin County, Virginia, Booker T. Washington (1856–1915) credited his education with helping him escape a life of poverty.

After attending and then teaching at Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (today Hampton University), he became the founding principal of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and led the college from its start in 1881 until his death in 1915.

With the college’s success, he became a nationally prominent educator, author, and orator.
