I want to share some context behind my vote on the council compensation update and how it connects to the financial accountability work I’ve been focused on since being elected.

Since being elected in 2022, I have worked to bring stronger financial transparency and accountability to our city’s budget.

I called attention to millions of dollars being spent beyond what the Council had approved, without clear transparency or reporting. That work helped move our city toward stronger budget discipline and clearer oversight so residents can have greater confidence in how public funds are managed.

Because of that commitment, I take compensation decisions seriously.

I supported updating City Council compensation because it had not been meaningfully adjusted since 1990, with only a $200 increase in 2018, even as the workload and expectations of the role have grown significantly. Most of this change primarily affects future councils, not me personally.

Serving on the City Council remains a service-oriented role. The updated compensation does not fully reflect the time commitment involved, but it does help reduce barriers so more working residents are able to consider serving our community in the future. Public service should be accessible to working people, not limited to retirees or those who can afford to serve without compensation.

This decision was discussed publicly, voted on openly, and aligned with state guidelines. The total impact is about $78,000 annually, representing roughly 0.07% of the City’s $112 million general fund budget.

I strengthened financial accountability for taxpayers, and I supported making public service sustainable for the future. I believe both matter.
