This one I’m keeping 🫢☺️🫶.
It’s a perfect little fruit bowl me thinks ☺️.
I’ve really been enjoying making segmented pieces- and playing with the shapes of the pieces seeing how they turn out. This one came out more chaos than the curves I was going for- but in the end I enjoyed the blend of chaos and the organized structured of the blocky bits.
Anyways- segmented bowl with walnut, elm, cherry, and tulip poplar. 🫶
… they are never ready for the Jenn level of storytelling and infodumping. ☺️🫶🤌 but yeah- sometimes I’ll get a gift or buy some boards from habitat, but 90% of it I collect from trees taken down around Flint. I chop up the logs, keep track of the wood and where it came from, and then seal and dry them myself.
My goal is in time- to return a piece to someone connected to each place.
I’ve been writing down all the stories as I go- whether it be the story of someone connected to the tree, or a story about collecting it.
I have no idea where this is going- and I recently found out someone had a similar project in Flint in the past.
I’ve heard of other woodworkers doing similar work where they live- and I think it’s cool.
It’s so easy for us to get disconnected to our sense of place- to forget with the hustle and bustle of life and technology that we are connected to the land and all that is living around us.
Anyone doing the work to reignite those connections inspires me- and I hope to contribute to others connecting with themselves through place 🫶.
lol this is actually nothing- but if I don’t stop and clean as I go the floor gets slippery and the lathe gets completely covered in shavings- so especially on a big green pieces I’m cleaning-cleaning-cleaning. 😅
I love a community makerspace- but I also cherish the time when I’m the only one in the woodshop so I can spread out as I go.
I have a deep appreciation for those out there with pristine wood shops- the amount of mess takes up so much time, but especially in a community space I try to leave it cleaner than when I got there! Better together 🫶.
