Feeling overwhelmed by clutter isn’t “all in your head.”
Research shows that disorganization can increase cortisol (the body’s main stress hormone) especially in women. Studies measuring cortisol levels found that women who perceived their homes as cluttered experienced higher stress levels throughout the day compared to those in more organized, restful environments.
Your body responds to visual chaos as unfinished work and constant stimulation. That stress is real, measurable, and valid.
Organizing isn’t about being perfect - it’s about creating a space that supports your nervous system, your energy, and your wellbeing.
✨ Science agrees: your environment matters.

Disorganization (not lack of space) causes 80% of household clutter.
Often times we can procrastinate tasks and set things aside for “later” and it can pile up over time. Or when you unpack you might just try your best to get it all done in a short amount of time, sometimes this leads to putting items in random places and kind of forgetting about a box or two. Or sometimes holding on to items that you no longer want, need or knew you even had. Or leaving bins unlabeled, especially if you live with more than one person, can contribute to disorganization - communication is key!
There are many ways someone can become disorganized.
Living in clutter can be hard, becoming and staying organized can be hard as well, you have to choose your hard. With a good system in place, over time organizing can be easy, effective and reduce stress in the home!
