Since August of last year, our Reading Class and After-School Program at Loon SPED Center in Bohol has been a meaningful journey of learning, growth, and connection with the learners. As the program concluded, learners were given books to take home so they could continue reading during their summer break—an extension of learning beyond the classroom and a simple way to nurture their love for reading at home.

Throughout the program, learners from Level 1 and Level 2 showed noticeable progress in their reading skills. From initially recognizing basic words and struggling with comprehension, many students gradually became more confident in identifying key ideas, answering comprehension questions, and engaging with stories. One touching moment was seeing students excitedly respond during storytelling sessions, especially when they began signing and expressing understanding of parts of the story on their own. These small but powerful moments reflected real progress and growing confidence in learning.

The program was designed to supplement and support what their teachers are already doing in school. Sessions included storytelling in sign language, guided reading, and interactive comprehension discussions that helped deepen understanding and engagement. This initiative continues to affirm the importance of accessible and engaging reading support for Deaf learners—helping build not just literacy skills, but confidence and joy in learning.

From zero to first clicks, the incoming Grade 7 students of Bohol Deaf Academy, Inc. stepped into a meaningful day of discovery with technology. Through guided and engaging sessions, they explored basic computer use, practiced typing with Microsoft Copilot, and participated in interactive tablet-based reading activities. For many, it was their first time using a laptop—learning how to navigate the keyboard and build confidence with each step.

As the sessions progressed, learning became more creative and hands-on. Students created simple games using MakeCode Arcade, following guided steps before exploring on their own—adding characters, backgrounds, and effects that reflected their ideas. Despite having little to no prior exposure, they were able to follow instructions, interact with AI tools, and produce their own digital outputs.

More than what they created, what truly stood out was their growing confidence. They began to feel comfortable, curious, and capable in a digital space—an important first step toward future learning.

Let’s continue creating opportunities where every student can explore, learn, and confidently use technology.
