Research the place you are visiting to see if any vaccinations are needed.  Make sure to schedule an appointment with a travel doctor in your city/state to get the necessary shots.  Get them in enough time so that they are in your system and working.  Don't try to wait until a day before you travel - you might be exposing yourself.  For example, a trip to Africa means you need to get malaria pills from the travel doctor - they need to be taken 7 days before your trip, taken everyday during your trip and 7 days after you get back from your trip.
