One of my favorite parts of planning private journeys is leaving room for the unexpected.
On our way to an oyster experience in Croatia, our driver suggested an unplanned stop in Ston… and it became one of those moments I still think about.
We visited the historic saltworks and learned how sea salt has been harvested here using traditional methods for nearly 4,000 years—sun, sea, wind, patience, and generations of knowledge.
And then something I didn’t expect…
Before we left, our driver surprised each of us with a small gift—a bag of Ston sea salt to take home.
Such a simple gesture, but it turned a sightseeing stop into a memory.
That’s what I love about thoughtful travel. Not rushing from highlight to highlight, but allowing space for local stories, unexpected stops, and moments that connect you to a place in a way a guidebook never could.
Travel tip: Leave room in your itinerary for local recommendations. Sometimes the places you never planned become the ones you remember most.
Have you ever had an unexpected stop become a highlight of your trip?
