The Bug and the Windshield

Some days you’re the bug, some days you're the windshield, and on the rare occasion some days you are both.

The Good:
My new record “El Sol” is out today on all the streaming platforms and I couldn’t be more proud of the work the band put into this effort. Andrew Clapp, Micah Munro-Gruver, Ethan Ice, Paul "Dr. Poz” Cohen, Mike Davidov, and special guest vocalist C.R. Gruver played and sang their asses off to make these songs come to life. The Bad:
Unfortunately our “El Sol" record release show this Saturday at Two Moons Music Hall in Denver has been canceled due to the venue shutting its doors and cancelling all future shows. All pre-sold tickets will be refunded and we appreciate you buying your tickets early and supporting live music. My heart goes out to my friends and staff at Two Moons and I wish them all the best in their next endeavors.

Opinion:
To borrow a phrase from a friend "the state of the music business in a lot of ways is coming to a grinding halt" and another kick ass small venue closing for good in the heart of a kick ass city seems like another nail in the coffin. Acts all across the board are having trouble filling seats and already small margins take out the little guys first. Economic turmoil seems to be fueling this wild fire and with belt tightening comes less and less money spent on entertainment and extras outside of the house.

Analysis:
Check on your music making/producing/promoting/club owning friends and (if you can) buy a ticket or two, a t-shirt, a CD/vinyl, and stream/share the f**k out of their music. As an oldster who loved to be driving around the country in a van with my friends playing shows in sweaty dive bars and clubs to the rock and roll faithful I feel for the younger generation of musicians who might not get to have that experience. Or even worse to think about the songs that wouldn’t get written and recorded because it was to damn hard to make a living playing music and writing songs for a living. Pay your dues yes but you shouldn’t have to go hungry or be un-housed for the sake of your art.
