Becoming a Commercial Pilot (General Information)
Take an intro flight
1. Private Pilot:
• Apply for student pilot (online)
• Apply for Medical certificate (valid for 60 months)
• Pass the FAA written exam
• Need minimum 40 hours of flight (include training & solo time)
• Pass the Checkride
• This license allow you to fly the plane but can’t fly for hire
2. Instrument rating:
• Need to have Private pilot certificate
• Medical certificate (if don’t have one yet)
• Pass the FAA written exam
• Minimum 50 hours of cross country flight time (some hours from private pilot can count toward Instrument, more detail at 14CFR 61.65)
• Pass the Checkride
• This rating will add to your private certificate, allow you to fly in the cloud or low visibility condition
3. Commercial pilot: Single Engine or Multi Engines
• Need to have Private certificate + Instrument rating (can do without instrument but if your goal is to be airline pilot then you need to be Instrument rated)
• Medical certificate (if don’t have one yet)
• Pass the FAA written exam
• 250 Hours (All the hours from Private & Instrument can be count toward commercial, more detail at 14 CFR 61.129)
• Pass the Checkride
• This rating allow you to fly for hire
After all above training, if you want to be a CFI (Certified flight instructor), you will need to train about 10hrs of flights and go for the checkride.
