ief system of the African American culture is a belief in God, family, and community. While attending college at Cu Boulder in 1981 I was exposed to Black American writers and visual artists that inspired me to become an artist. Black American Artists like Romare Bearden‘s collages, Charles White’s pencil, and charcoal drawings and contemporary artists like Charles Bibbs lithographs, Annie Lee‘s depiction of everyday life in African American society, and a personal friend of the family Jon Toms’ a local painter and visual artist in Denver with national recognition whose paintings and sculptures about dreams, love, and sports has greatly influenced me. Seeing the Van Gogh exhibit at the Denver Art Museum has influenced me more expressive in my paintings. Oral tradition, poetry, and music have greatly influenced African American culture so this also inspires me to express myself through storytelling. That is why I believe in God’s inspiration it invites the viewer to see the emotions and feelings of a person, place, or thing. I feel as an artist I am giving something of myself to those that are inspired by my work a sense of community.
