The Upside Report
French Polynesia just protected an area of ocean the size of France.
520,000 square kilometers. Off-limits to industrial fishing, deep-sea mining, and bottom trawling.
That brings 30% of the nation's waters under full protection - reaching the global "30 by 30" ocean goal years ahead of schedule.
It safeguards sharks, sea turtles, whales, endangered seabirds, and one of the Pacific's most important tuna spawning grounds.
And it was driven by local communities reviving rāhui - the traditional practice of closing parts of the sea so life can return.
Save this as a reminder that the ocean is still worth fighting for. And that people are still winning.
