🚫 CONTENT WARNING: To remain mindful of our followers, the "before" images in this post have been blurred to obscure graphic details while still showing the gravity of the situation Canelo survived.

🐾 TEAMWORK SAVES LIVES: Canelo’s Journey to Freedom 🐾

They say it takes a village, and nothing proves that more than the story of Canelo. Canelo and his companion, Zeus, were recently seized by the court as part of an ongoing investigation and placed into the care of Val Verde County Animal Control so that BAM could pull them for our transport program. Because this is an active, open investigation, this is the extent of the details we can share about their past—but today, we want to share the incredible story of Canelo’s resilience and the amazing team that came together to save him. (Stay tuned, because Zeus’ story will follow shortly!)

When Canelo was rescued, he was found with a collar deeply embedded in his neck—a heartbreaking and severe sign of neglect and abuse. The collar was so deeply embedded that it required immediate surgical removal.

We are incredibly grateful to Val Verde County Animal Control for stepping up to fund his medical care and swiftly bringing Canelo to the vet to get the help he so desperately needed.

Canelo was rushed to Del Rio Veterinary Diagnostic Hospital, where the wonderful medical team successfully performed surgery to remove the collar. He remained in their loving care while his neck healed, and the amazing team at Del Rio Diagnostic even neutered him before he went home to his foster family. Thank you, Del Rio Diagnostic, for going above and beyond!

Today, Canelo’s neck has healed wonderfully, and he is officially in the care of one of our phenomenal BAM foster families! He is currently awaiting his upcoming rescue transport out of Del Rio to one of our incredible out-of-state adoption partners.

For an animal who came from such a dark place, Canelo has absolutely no bitterness in his heart. His fosters report that he is an absolute gentleman. He is incredibly gentle with the kids, great with other pets, and even good with the chickens! He carries his favorite comfort bone with him everywhere he goes and has fully embraced the indoor dog life, enjoying long, happy naps on the couch and beds with the kids.

This is what community looks like. Thank you to the Val Verde County Sheriff's Office (Animal Control) and Del Rio Diagnostic Vet for working hand-in-hand with BAM to give Canelo the second chance at life he always deserved.

Stay tuned for updates on Canelo's upcoming journey, and look out for Zeus’ story coming soon! 🧡

This morning, four of our sweet BAM Del Rio dogs made the trip to our amazing friends at Charming Pet Rescue in Boerne, TX!🐾

Let's give a big send-off to Barkley, Sixx, Shortcake, and Thumbelina (all from City of Del Rio Animal Services)!

Sixx has a bit of a heartbreaking backstory. She was actually found abandoned inside a hotel room. Housekeeping realized the guests had checked out but left her behind, so the hotel managers called animal control. AC got her out safely, and we were able to pull her from the shelter so she never has to worry about being left behind again.

We want to give a massive thank you to Debbie's Dog Grooming for not only getting these pups cleaned up and looking their absolute best, but for also fostering them right up until they left. We are so grateful for everything you do!

And of course, a huge thank you to Wayne Morgan for driving them safely to Boerne.

We couldn't do any of this without our incredible partnerships, fosters, and volunteers. Teamwork truly makes the dream work! ❤️

109 DEL RIO ANIMALS MICROCHIPPED TODAY! 🐾❤️

We are absolutely blown away by our community! Showing up like this on a holiday proves just how much Del Rio loves its pets. Because of your dedication, 109 local pets are going into tonight’s fireworks so much safer. 🎆✨

Microchipping—and most importantly, registering those chips—allows Animal Control to quickly identify owners and get lost pets straight back home. This keeps families together and saves precious kennel space for animals who truly have nowhere else to go. The proof is in the numbers: chipped dogs are 2x more likely to make it home, and chipped cats are 20x more likely! 🐕🐈

An event like today takes a village, and we have some incredible people to thank:

❤️ Our Phenomenal BAM Team: Thank you for sacrificing your own holiday today to keep our community's fur babies protected. You are the heartbeat of this mission!
🏛️ Val Verde County & Commissioner Juan Carlos Vazquez Precinct 2: Thank you for providing the wonderfully air-conditioned building at the Tony Faz County Annex. It made all the difference!
🚔 Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez & Val Verde County Animal Control: Thank you, Sheriff, for helping us arrange the event, and thank you to Animal Control for keeping things running smoothly and directing traffic!
🏷️ Fi Tracking: Thank you for generously providing the free microchips that made today possible!
☕Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q & Starbucks: Thank you for keeping our volunteers fueled with delicious breakfast and coffee!
🥤HTeaO Del Rio: Thank you for helping us spread the word by advertising our clinic on your road signage!
🐾Thank you to Mr. Luna for donating cleaning supplies after noticing a pet have an accident on the floor!

Most of all, THANK YOU to everyone who brought their pets out today. You are responsible, amazing pet parents!

Have a safe, happy, and peaceful 4th of July, everyone! 🇺🇸❤️✨
