Vegan Publishers was launched in 2013 in order to raise awareness of the vital importance of veganism in creating a more compassionate and just society. Christen Mailler and Dr. Casey Taft, had been recently married and were expecting the first of their two daughters, and they started the small publishing company because they were struck by how limited the literature was on veganism. Growing up I remember being taught to ‘treat others how you would want to be treated’ and ‘be kind to animals’.
This is pretty confusing for kids growing up though is it not? Because on one hand, we are taught to care for animals and on the other hand we are served the chopped up bodies of animals.
Why aren’t we teaching kids to be consistent in their morals & actions?
I remember when I made the connection between my ‘food’ and where it actually came from. A living, breathing, feeling being. I was in my teens and it was like an epiphany moment - ‘I’m eating the body of someone!”
I had a dog who I absolutely adored, I called myself an ‘animal lover’ and yet I was eating the bodies of animals like chickens. I thought, how hypocritical of me? Treat others how you would want to be treated — is a great rule to live by, but only if you apply it consistently.
So, WHY am I vegan?
Well very simply because I see myself in the animals, sentient feeling beings experiencing the world, who want to live, free from suffering and exploitation. If it were me in the animals position I’d want humans to boycott the industries that violate animal rights.
Let’s have compassion for animals. Let’s teach the next generations to respect all sentient beings — regardless of their species, by living vegan.
