You may have come across a situation where you can get solar cells and related materials at lower than normal prices where making the panel might still be considerably cheaper. However, your applications would probably have to be in locations away from your home (for insurance reasons) and be totally off-grid (using batteries), like a shed, or barn, or some remote area where homeowner insurance and tax breaks won't be used.
