âWhen Work Leaves You Drained⌠Pour Back Into Yourself.â
Some days, work can make you feel invisibleâlike no matter how much effort you put in, the appreciation just isnât there. And when you come home, hoping for a little validation, the chaos of life is waiting for you instead.
On days like this, remember: you donât have to wait for appreciation to give yourself care.
⨠Take a moment to do something just for youâwhether itâs sitting in silence for five minutes, indulging in your favorite snack (without sharing!), or simply reminding yourself that you are valuable, with or without recognition.
You donât need permission to refill your cup. You deserve it. đ

IT by Day, Gentle Parenting Negotiator by Night
So, I pick my son up from school the other day, and as weâre walking out, his teacher is right behind him. Naturally, I ask how heâs doingâexpecting the usual report on his class participation, maybe a side note about his excessive energy levels.
But no.
She gives me that look and says, âHeâs doing great⌠but today he called someone âgay.ââ
Now, in my world, I go from troubleshooting server issues to troubleshooting six-year-old logic real fast. My brain immediately shifts gears from âDid I close out that ticket?â to âWhat fresh parenting challenge is this?â
I look at him. âWhere did you hear that?â
Cue the classic âI donât know.â If you have kids, you know this means âI definitely know, but I also know I shouldnât have said it.â
So we get home, and now Iâm in full HR-meets-gentle-parenting mode. My husband and I sit him down for The Talk.
Me: Do you know what that word means?
Him: No.
Me: Then why did you say it?
Him: I donât know.
At this point, Iâm explaining how words matter and that if you donât know what something means, you donât just throw it aroundâespecially if itâs not kind. Meanwhile, in the back of my mind, Iâm thinking how wild it is that I spend my day explaining complex IT concepts at work and then come home to negotiate with a six-year-old who somehow has more questions than a helpdesk ticketing system.
I wrap it up with, âIf youâre unsure about a word, ask an adult. And if itâs not kind, thereâs no need to say it at all. You can think it in your head, but we donât put negativity into the world.â
He nods, taking it all in. success. Crisis averted.
âŚUntil he looks me dead in the eye and says, âSo can I say it in my head⌠and then whisper it?â
Yâall. I troubleshoot systems for a living, but this kid is the real challenge.
Feeling Valued at Work Matters More Than Ever
One of the biggest reasons employees today donât stay long at a job? They donât feel valued. And letâs be realâno one wants to put in effort day after day just to feel like a replaceable cog in a machine.
When employees donât feel appreciated, motivation drops, engagement decreases, and turnover skyrockets. People start doing the bare minimum, looking for better opportunities, or mentally checking out. Thatâs why workplace culture and recognition actually matter.
A few months ago, my company hosted an appreciation dinner for the services and operations teams. They took us to Cosm, an immersive sports theater, where we got to enjoy great food, drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere. It was a thoughtful gesture that made a differenceâgiving people a chance to connect outside of work and feel seen for what they contribute.
This is just one example, but it goes to show that companies who actively invest in their employeesâ well-being and morale see the benefitsâhigher retention, stronger teams, and a culture where people actually want to be.
Feeling valued isnât a luxury; itâs a necessity. If youâve ever left a job because of a lack of appreciation, youâre not alone. Whatâs one thing a job did (or didnât do) that made you feel valued? Letâs talk in the comments!
