A clue that food might be a coping strategy is if it feels scary or impossible to stop.
Food is the best solution for physical hunger...
..because there is a FINITE amount of food that solves physical hunger.
It looks like this:
✅ You’re physically hungry
✅ You eat
✅ You feel satisfied
✅ You stop eating
✅ You move on with your life
Coping strategies are things that help us numb out or disconnect from our dysregulated inner experience.
So when we use food to cope…
…there is an INFINITE amount of food we can eat because it never really works to solve the dysregulated inner experience that’s creating the “using food to cope”.
It looks like this:
✅ Something triggers you
✅ It doesn’t feel good because the trigger dysregulated your inner experience
✅ The protective strategy (that you learned a long time ago) to help you stop feeling the intensity in your body is to eat
The way out of this loop is through engaging in regulatory resources.
These are anything that help you feel present, calm, and safe in the present moment.
Taking a walk, get into nature, call a trusted friend, play with your pet, shake, dance, etc. are a few ideas.
The more you engage in regulatory practices, the easier it becomes to not choose food to cope.

A long time ago before you had words to describe the overwhelming emotional intensity pulsing through your body, you learned that food made you feel better.
And it did make you feel better. It was a way to change your inner experience and maybe even eat so much that the fullness numbed out whatever else was there.
The wisdom of your nervous system took over and you learned that food worked as a coping strategy. What a gift our nervous system gives us with all these protective layers!
The problems start when the thing we learned to do to feel safe and protected starts getting in the way of our health and vitality.
Then the problems become exacerbated because we think we can just “diet & exercise ourselves down”, will power and think our way to “fixing our body”
Except that our autonomic nervous system is like 500 million years old and will always win over our thinking mind when it comes to feeling safe.
The way we gently untangle food and feelings is to practice regulating the nervous system and teaching it safety...and this happens at the body level.

At the heart of all the ways we use food to cope, is a dysregulated nervous system trying to regulate itself with food.
Stressed out =
dysregulated nervous system =
stress eating to cope.
The problem here is that unless you’re physically hungry, using food doesn’t regulate the NS or process the emotional experience….
But a long time ago, when you didn’t have the healing tools to soothe and regulate your nervous system, you learned that food worked...and it did work!
It was the way your wise nervous system learned how to protect you from icky painful feelings...by stuffing them down with food.
Unfortunately, too many of us ignore the root cause of emotional eating...
—which is a dysregulated nervous system—
..and decide to go on a diet, hit the gym, and double-down on willpower.
This is a mistake.
This is like putting a bandaid on a bullet hole.
It will never work in the long run, which is likely why you either can’t lose weight or you gain it back.
The way to untangle
stress eating
anxious eating
mindless eating
overeating
bored eating
comfort eating
habit eating
binge eating...
..is to regulate your nervous system.
The more time you spend in the nervous system thriving state of regulation, the easier it is to untangle food and feelings.
