This heartbreaking story serves as yet another reminder—if you see something, say something! This poor dog very easily could have been killed if someone hadn’t called to make a report and get help. Stay aware, stay diligent, and call for help when it’s needed. Hoping for a speedy recovery for Olivia and appropriate handling of the criminal case resulting from this incident.

On Sunday, March 29 at approximately 4:40 p.m., Sherman Police were dispatched to the 200-block of North Grand Avenue regarding the report of a dog being shot with a pellet gun.

Upon arrival, officers were told a dog had been heard yelping for a period of time. During the investigation, officers located two individuals, 41-year-old Gary Larkins and 52-year-old Thomas Bush, with the injured dog. Bush was holding a hammer while standing over the dog when officers arrived.

Based on the investigation, officers determined the dog had been shot, and both Larkins and Bush admitted to attempting to euthanize the animal.

Larkins and Bush were arrested and charged with Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals Causing Serious Bodily Injury, a 3rd degree felony.

Sherman Animal Services took custody of the dog, which has since been named Olivia. She was transported to a local veterinary emergency hospital for treatment. Olivia sustained serious injuries, including trauma to the head and face, but is expected to survive. She is currently recovering at the Sherman Animal Shelter.

If found guilty at trial, Larkins and Bush could face between 2-10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
