Most leadership training in healthcare focuses on what to do.

Almost none of it teaches you what to do first, before you do anything else.

Emotional regulation is the part most leaders skip. They jump straight from the trigger to the response, and the response carries whatever the trigger left in their body. The voice gets sharp. The eyes go flat. The team feels it before anyone says a word.

Here is the part I think leaders miss: emotional regulation is not a personality trait. It is a habit, and it has three observable steps you can practice.

1. The pause.

A regulated leader buys themselves a half-second before responding to anything hard. Not to look composed. To actually become composed. That half-second is the difference between a reaction and a decision.

2. The naming.

Before solving anything, a regulated leader names the moment out loud. "This is hard. Let me think." "I want to give you a real answer, not a fast one." Naming what is happening tells the team they are seen, and tells your own nervous system that it does not have to fight or flee.

3. The temperature.

A regulated leader takes responsibility for the temperature of the room without taking responsibility for the cause. You did not create the staffing crisis. You did not create the upset patient. You are still the one who decides how the next sixty seconds feel for everyone in the building.

These three habits do not require a course. They require attention, repetition, and the willingness to look unhurried in moments that feel urgent.

That is one more way to calm the chaos.
