Covington Latin School

Covington Latin is proud to spotlight alumnus Janis Kukainis from the Class of 1998.

Since graduating from Latin School, Janis has built a career that has taken him across industries, across the country, and around the world.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. He then spent six years at General Dynamics NASSCO, where he helped build 40,000-ton ships while working in project management and business development.

Janis went on to earn a graduate degree from MIT’s Sloan School of Management before joining Amazon Operations, where he spent six years leading teams of up to 1,500 people.

Following his interest in entrepreneurship, Janis co-founded a consulting company that builds software solutions for large enterprises and fast-growing startups. More recently, he started a real estate company developing hotels for travelers going on safari in Tanzania, along with an inbound tour operator business that helps bring those adventures to life.

Reflecting on his time at Latin School, Janis shared that he's always been grateful to Latin School for two reasons. First, I met some of the finest people I have ever had the privilege to call friends. Second, it taught me how to study, giving me the confidence to keep learning and embrace career changes I never would have imagined.
