Our good friend, former NHL player Matt Lashoff, cracked open a room full of high achievers with that one line. We often assume failure is what sends us into a tailspin - a bad deal, a lost game, a missed opportunity. But more often, the real spiral begins when it’s time to move on…when the role shifts…when the assignment changes.

And why is that? Identity.

“You are more than the role you play,” Matt reminded a room of leaders in downtown St. Louis, leaders who are, in many ways, known by the roles they carry. We all needed that reminder. If we don’t take a full, honest look at where we’ve anchored our identity, especially when those anchors are tied to things that move, we will struggle when transition comes.

Matt continued, “We fall apart when we aren’t anchored in transition.” That’s truth.

As faith‑driven leaders and athletes, we know there is one anchor that never shifts, never fails, and is always safe to attach to. When we choose to anchor ourselves to Christ, we can avoid the spiral that comes when roles, titles, and assignments inevitably change. Even more, we become more agile - more ready for whatever God calls us to next - because our identity is rooted in something unshakeable and fueled by a power that isn’t our own.
