The roofing shingles are now hauled to a grinding facility where they will grinded into a material that can be used in what is called a "hot mix" for asphalt paving. The material has a consistency which is similar to sand when the sorting and grinding process is complete. Although it's use in asphalt paving is the most common, the material has been used for other purposes such as decorative landscaping material (much like colored mulches).
