Between the skylight and window sits a piece of 1/2” steel and the two units are screwed and epoxied together in the field. Architectural and design intent drive complex engineering when the demand is maximum sight lines.

If you think about the realism of expression, that’s a weird one. But it applies to air sealing as well, SIGA tape joining drywall to our window jambs aids in reducing drafts and fortifies our air sealing efforts. Pitched window sills flashed with zip (or WRB of your choosing) guarantee water passively sheds to the exterior instead of sit in the RO.

Backer rod and sealant work similarly, both applications allow air sealing and waterproofing measure to exist independently and be executed intentionally. Closed cell foam (the crap in a can) will suffice if you’re comfortable with surface temperatures, moisture content of the framing and its ability to cure- but you really can’t rely on it to cure and adhere sufficiently.
