Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend 🇺🇸
Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day honors the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day after the Civil War, the holiday began as communities gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. The first national observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868.
Over the years, Memorial Day has become both a day of remembrance and the unofficial start of summer, but its true meaning should never be forgotten. Today, many honor the fallen by visiting cemeteries, attending parades, flying flags, and observing the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 PM.
As we enjoy time with family and friends today, let’s take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom ❤️
