GROW Chainsaw Arms!
I was working with Chris Shenton, the chief engineer of my production studio, and we were discussing our plan for putting on a fully virtual Rock the Recession Keynote Event.
There are lots of moving parts since the show includes many different camera shots, video elements, audio drops, and special effects. Chris shared that he was building multiple redundancies into our system in case something didn’t work during the show. I told Chris not to worry because as long as he gave me a live microphone that I would be able to talk for an hour about how companies can Rock the Recession without any notes, slides, videos, special effects or all the cool camera angles that we had worked so hard to set up.
Granted, the audience might not enjoy the show as much, but if that was our worst-case scenario, it was OK! And, Chris said to me, “You’ve Got Chainsaw Arms!” He said that I wasn’t worried about chopping down the forest because my arms were chainsaws, so I never got nervous (not true by the way, but flattering). On the other hand, Chris said that he always worried because he just had regular arms and wanted to make sure that if he forgot his ax on the way out the door, he’d have a backup plan for all those trees…
a. I love the idea that to be successful, we have to be so well-rehearsed and prepared that we’ve GROWN Chainsaw Arms...
b. Chris might not have Chainsaw Arms when it comes to Recessions, but he has Chainsaw Arms when it comes to producing a virtual show. The best part is that Chris lives in South Africa and STILL can produce my show from thousands of miles and a six-hour time difference away. He’s got incredibly long Chainsaws!
c. For business leaders, the moral of the story is to prepare hard, put in the time, and you’ll approach each problem feeling like you’ve got Chainsaw Arms!
