An all-Black town called Willard, Virginia was destroyed to build what is now Dulles International Airport. But there’s more to the story. The town was named after a rich white man named Joseph Edward Willard, and I wrote about the Willard family in the Reparations chapter of my new book, Why Does Everything Have to Be About Race? The irony is that the federal government actually PAID REPARATIONS to the rich white Willard family in the 1860s for the loss of their enslaved Black workers. Yes, you read that correctly. The government paid reparations to white enslavers. Yes, that’s the same federal government that took away Black-owned land in the town of Willard nearly 100 years later. And the same federal government that won’t pay reparations to Black people today. If I make it to Dulles Airport this year, I’ll do a video to tell the rest of the story.
