The Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center is complete! Named for Brooklyn-born activist, educator, and politician Shirley Chisholm—the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress—the Center establishes a welcoming hub for fitness, recreation, learning, and gathering in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood.
Preserving and extending the site’s existing recreational uses, the building features a transparent main entrance and large arched windows that invite visitors in while bringing natural light into the interior. Lower levels offer spaces for recreation and exercise, including a double-height competition-grade pool and a gymnasium with a walking track. Daylit spaces for community and education programs on the upper floors lead to a wrap-around rooftop terrace and garden. Openings between floors maximize visual and physical connections between programs, establishing a vibrant and airy atmosphere that welcomes everyone.

On view now in Studio Gang’s Chicago gallery! “Eyes on the Future” is a new exhibition for the 2025 Chicago Architecture Biennial that delves into our recent Populus hotel project in downtown Denver. Through architectural models, drawings, material samples, and more, visitors can discover how the hotel creates a unique experience for guests by opening up to the local community and environment.
The building’s signature “aspen eye” windows frame a look into the process and intention behind the design, while also transforming our Chicago gallery into a glimpse of Colorado—inside and out.
Open through February 28, 2026, visitors can book an appointment online via the link in bio 🔗 to visit during regular public hours on Wednesdays from 4-6pm and select Fridays.
Special thanks to .chicago .villages .design for their help and support!
