Myth: A Dog Knows When It's Done Wrong.

The truth is that the "guilty face" we associate with a dog's big eyes, ears pulled back, and shrunken posture is an appeasement attempt. They don't know that you're yelling about the p*e on the floor, only that when there's p*e on the floor when they're around, you're going to get upset. That drives them to get better at hiding it the next time they have to relieve themselves and the only option is the floor.
