Kristal Rivers was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1996 and admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1997. Her career has been varied giving her a background in both criminal and civil litigation. Rivers joined the Illinois Attorney General's office in 2010. As a member of the Sexually Violent Persons Bureau she seeks to civilly commit persons who have been convicted of a sexually violent crime and meet the statutory requirements of the Illinois Sexually Violent Persons Act. Prior to her position with the Attorney General, Mrs. Rivers was in solo practice from 2001 until 2010. Her practice focused on real estate transactions and civil litigation. Rivers managed a law practice that included a staff of 6. Before solo practice, Mrs. Rivers was a prosecutor with the Dallas County Prosecutor's office in Dallas Texas. There she served as a Chief Prosecutor in misdemeanor courts and as a Lead Felony Prosecutor in the felony Child Abuse Division. Rivers has had more than 100 jury and 85 bench civil or criminal trials. Rivers is an active member of the Cook County Bar Association and on the Judicial Evaluation Committee. She is a member of the Black Women’s Lawyer’s Association and is on the community service committee. As a member of the American Bar Association, Mrs. Rivers is a Liaison to the Judicial Conference, Lawyers Division for the ABA Taskforce on Human Trafficking and as a member of the Division’s Diversity Committee. As a concerned citizen and attorney Mrs. Rivers was a board member for the Regional Fair Housing Center from 2004-2013. The Regional Fair Housing Center is a non-profit 501(c) 3, HUD certified Housing Counseling agency affiliate which in addition to extensive foreclosure mediation, offers home buyers workshops and assistance. Rivers’ volunteer service includes participation in the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court’s Expungement Summits, School speaking engagements on becoming an attorney and belief in oneself, Trinity United Church of Christ’s Bread Basket, resume reviews and mentoring young attorneys. Rivers received her Bachelor of Science from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1993 and her Juris Doctorate from Drake University in 1996. BAR RATINGS

The CBA wrote that Kristal Rivers is ”passionate and enthusiastic about the justice system” and they found that she “possess the requisite qualifications to serve as a Circuit Court Judge.”
