Fred Mitchell was a longtime (1974-2015) Chicago Tribune sportswriter who was a record-setting placekicker. The Fred Mitchell Award is handed out annually from among 750 eligible colleges for the most outstanding kicker from an FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA or community college.
