Why should you read extensively?

There are indeed far more interesting things for children to do other than read a book. However, there are those things which are necessary, compulsory, a must. I think that getting a pass mark in your SATs or even your English GCSE is one of the important things.
Really… What are the benefits of reading?

 Reading is the foundation of literacy, it promotes comprehension and critical thinking skills. It develops general language competence.
 Better vocabulary comes from reading books, not general conversation. Words are not learnt by a single exposure instead by multiple encounters in context.
 It helps with spelling. A big part of knowing how to spell and knowing the meanings of words is by memorizing them.
 Helps improve writing. There is a clear link between reading and writing. The more we read the better we become at writing. How this happens is still unclear but it is documented (Hafiz and Tudor 1989) that this happens.
 Reading helps to develop your brain. It allows you to mentally picture concepts or ideas.
As boring as it may seem, and even though there are other things you could be doing, make time for reading. You will be happy you did!
