For many families worldwide, putting their child in an orphanage is an act of sacrificial love.
It’s the place where their child can get food, shelter, and education.
But research is showing more and more:
filling practical needs can never replace the love of a family.
As 1MILLIONHOME, we partner with organizations who have transformed to family-based care.
We work with them to train even more orphanages to help children reunify with safe, permanent families.
We have seen thousands of children come home—but there’s thousands more waiting for family.
Join us in the mission to see one million children come home.

What is family strengthening—and why does it matter?
Every community has support systems and services available for families. Education, medical care, food markets, churches—all of these combine to strengthen a family.
But even in communities with all these services, children still get separated from their families. How?
It can looks like this: A father suddenly passes away—the mom, devastated, doesn't know what to do, because they're already impoverished.
So now, they have poverty plus the loss of a primary caregiver. The mom needs to pay for schooling—but they don't have an income anymore.
So she takes her child to the orphanage.
That’s the best solution, right?
It’s easy to think so.
But family strengthening should always be our first response.
In that dire situation, family strengthening would say:
“Well, hold on. How can we help provide the education so that that's covered? How can the church give any other support? How can we pull in the extended family, can her younger sister moves in and help them?”
All of these things strengthen the family. And when the family gets stronger, especially in time of crisis—that means they won’t be separated.
And that’s what keeps kids off the streets, and curbs the crisis.
Let’s start with the family.
