YOU SCREAM. I SCREAM. WE ALL SCREAM "WHY IS THE MCFLURRY MACHINE ALWAYS BROKEN!?"
In the list of certainties in life (Death & Taxes), one would be hard to argue a broken McDonald's ice cream machine should not be on the list. But no more. We hope. The U.S. Copyright Office issued a new set of exemptions last week that allows restaurants to repair equipment used in "retail-level commercial food preparation," which includes those soft-serve ice cream machines used to make McFlurrys.
Now, you may wonder why, of the 2,000+ US Government agencies, does the US Copyright Office holds the key to the McFlurry's liberation. Because Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act makes it illegal for third parties to bypass digital locks on any copyrighted materiel, including software used in commercial devices like those McDonald's ice cream machines, even for repairs. What that has meant for McFlurry fans is that every time a McDonald's ice cream machine breaks or has any kind of technical problem, it can only be repaired by the manufacturer and copyright holder. Which since 1956 has been Taylor Company, an Illinois-based manufacturer of ice cream machines. The only company (until now) with the sole "right to repair" them.

Personally, I think an event of this solemnity should have included a Presidential proclaimation, paid days off, fireworks, free McFlurrys, songs etc. Oh well. I'm gonna run out an grab a McFlurry. Let's hope the bathroom is not out of order.

A few weeks ago we asked chefs what was their favorite brand of Japanese kitchen cutlery was. The top two brands were Shun and NOTA (None of the above). Today we look West and ask Chefs what is their favorite brand of Western style knives. We can't list them all so below are a few leading brands. If "Other" please take the time to list the your favorite brand in the Comments section. Thanks for playing along and sharing.
