Millennials and Gen X can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines during election cycles. We are no longer children and its time to take responsibility for the institutions our parents maintained. If good people don't step up, destructive people will.
One of the questions I get asked is, “How would you fight Republicans (or Democrats) if elected?” I’ll be honest, that word “fight” makes me uncomfortable. I’m running to represent all the people in this district; Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike. I believe language like that has contributed to the growing division and loss of civility in our politics.
That said, I would vote no on this late push to redraw Tennessee’s districts so close to the midterms. It feels like partisan maneuvering that voters didn’t ask for, and it undermines trust. I also worry about the inconsistency I see: many state-level Republicans proudly say they stand for small government, yet this map takes decision-making power away from local communities when those communities make choices that don’t align with state priorities.
To me, true small government means respecting the division of powers and trusting localities to make decisions that best serve their residents. Looking at the proposed map, stretching District 9 from Shelby County all the way to Franklin County creates an enormous district where people face very different daily realities and priorities. I experienced this challenge firsthand when I ran in District 4 as an Independent in 2024. It seems nearly impossible to truly listen to and represent such a wide area effectively.
My hope is that we can all recommit to the principle of small government in practice, not just in rhetoric. Local voices matter, and I believe respecting them is how we rebuild trust across party lines.
