I think there is huge potential for Meta's Ray-Ban glasses. But not in the "I want to view someone's Instagram posts when you are meeting them IRL."
Think of technical repairs. I have a client who manufactures very complex and expensive machines. As part of their service agreement, they ship a pair to their customers, and instead of having to send a tech out for troubleshooting (initially), they have a master technician walk the customer's tech through repairs by looking through their eyes, so to speak. So far, it's saving them from having to dispatch a tech for 60-70% of calls. A huge saving in costs and labor.
Imagine a critical piece of gear across town, the ocean, or even in space, going down hard, and the OE being able to help the customer, captain, or astronaut work through fixing the problem with a master tech, who's back in the office.
Another interesting application would be for workplace safety: A plant ops manager could walk the floor in real-time with a corporate safety manager for daily safety works, or heaven forbid, if something goes wrong, to get guidance and feedback critical for an investigation.
Not every new tech is worth it (looking at you, 3D TVs), but adapting tech like augmented reality to run your company better or helping customers faster is worth looking into.
August is full of opportunities to build your . Here are a couple of ideas to get things rolling for you and your team:
To Do:
PTO audit: With five months left in the year, ensure your people are taking the PTO they have earned – encourage them to get a vacation on the books before the end of the year.
Keeping promises: Did you promise things to your team during their annual review? Like training or mentorship? Revisit that and make sure you are on track before the Q4 circus comes to town.
Holidays:
8/2: International Beer Day, National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, National Water Balloon Day. (Make HR’s day and celebrate all three)
8/4: National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
8/10: National Bowling Day
8/16: National Hawaiian Shirt Day (Shout out to Bill Lundburg)
Service Opportunity:
Donate school supplies or adopt a teacher.
August is also National Wellness Month, so it might be a good time to reboot any wellness initiatives that have been forgotten or gone stale. Let’s go get those steps...and maybe an ice cream sandwich.
Shared experiences can help build an organization's . Here are some ideas for June 2024:
June 1st – National Trails Day - Take that monthly ops meeting outside. (Bonus points: tell your boss to take a hike...with you.)
16th – Father’s Day: Let the office dads show off their grilling skills with a cookout. (Make sure you clack the tongs together first.)
19 – Juneteenth. Many companies have made this a company holiday.
21 – National Take Your Dog to Work Day. (Post pictures, please.)
Summer-long ideas:
Watermelon Wednesdays
Popsicle Fridays
Half-days on Friday.
Also, with the start of hurricane season, it's a good time to remind employees to work on their preparations and review your organization's plans. Ready.gov has some great tools for families and organizations to use.
