Tonight at 7PM on Spectrum News 1 North Carolina Tune in to watch our special, Helene: One Year Later. Over the past year, I've traveled countless times up to Western North Carolina to meet people in the mountains. It's been an honor to hear their stories and share their experiences during Helene, as well as get to see their recovery in progress.

While there has been a lot of progress in the mountains, many neighbors still need help and have a long way to go. Please watch tonight, keep volunteering or donating, most importantly take a trip and support the small businesses in the area! They still have a long road to recovery after

I-40 is open to traffic! Crews worked hard to clean up debris from 4 different areas along I-40 near the TN/NC border, as well as repair the on- and off-ramps at the Waterville exit, after last week’s flooding and slides. We had originally estimated two weeks for the repair, but it was completed in just about a week. We are thankful for the hard work that went into reopening this vital roadway. I-40 has returned to one lane of travel in each direction, with a lowered speed limit. Oversized loads are not allowed. This restriction is related to the repair from Hurricane Helene in September 2024, not the recent rockslide. Crews will continue to be working on I-40 and we remind people to slow down in work zones, for their safety and the safety of the crews.

This sweet little angel Michael is up in heaven after fighting for 7 weeks and 4 days. Tonight, I spoke with his mother Kristy about blood donations, and the impact a simple donation can make for families trying to spend every precious second with their loved ones. I challenge everyone to go give blood this week to honor little Mikey and his family. https://gf.me/u/y4wpf8

Pretty crazy to see how high the water reached on Ocracoke. This was posted by one of the local businesses earlier. Emergency crews are already on the island helping residents.

UPDATE: Thank you all so much for your outpouring of love and concern for Ocracoke and the residents. Everyone I have talked to has been absolutely and truly overwhelmed with the help and care that is pouring in. We are so grateful to you all. ❤️💕
Can you spy the new tideline marker at the Village Craftsmen? I think it’s safe to say that we are going to have a lot of clean up to do over then next few weeks!
