To effectively control spiders, the conditions inside and outside should be looked at in order to minimize current and future infestations.
Inside: eliminating or minimizing webs, egg sacs, and harborage areas are great long term preventative methods of non-chemical control. Additionally, boxes should be stored off the floor and sealed if possible. Sticky traps/glue traps can also be strategically placed to catch spiders, but also will tell you what areas are problematic.
Outside: caulking and installing weather stripping around doors, windows, vents or other entry points is helpful to exclude spiders from structures. Dense evergreen bushes and ivy provide shelter for many insects including spiders, cuttingshr shrubberies back at least 12 inches from the structure is recommended.
Let’s not forget that spiders are attracted to insect populations for food. So keeping the area free of other insects will make the property less attractive to spiders.Changing exterior lights to the yellow bug lights reduce the number of insects attracted to the property.
Once spiders have been eliminated inside the structure, a residual treatment on the exterior of the building every two or three months spring through mid autumn should prevent spider infestations inside.
