Post 2

Hi. Torri again.

I continue to learn more and more as I go about this process. Here are a few more things I’m learning:

1. I still love Krista, but it turns out she can really get on my nerves. Her all-CAPS texts when she shoots out demands to have been really triggering me.

2. Self expression through art may be the tool I’ve been needing to get me to truly move on from my ex boyfriend.

3. I’m convinced it’s entirely possible to have one’s head spin and pop off from too much coffee. (I need the caffeine to create. No… really I do.)

4. Mice can climb up walls. That’s an inside joke just for Krista and me. If you want to hear the story, you’ll have to come to the sale.

See you there.
We’ll talk mice, and you can tell us about your meraki.

Rock the vote!

Hi. Torri here.

I decided to do Meraki Mission
with Krista because I really wanted to learn more about myself and my creative processes.

Well, I’m learning alright!

What follows is a short list of what I’ve learned so far in the few weeks since working on this project :

1. November will be my busiest month all year. (I have this sale AND I have to finish my website for my private practice this month.) So don’t take offense if I don’t text you back until after November 30.

2. I can’t learn to sew over night.

What?! Friggin news to me.
I started out thinking the sewing skills that I attained from 9th grade home ec class, along with the DYI Designer Youtube instructional videos would be all I needed to design and sew kick ass tshirts.
After four hours of trying to cut and sew and walking around in circles while muttering “but they make it look so easy “ to myself like someone who hasn’t taken her meds in a good while, I squealed to Krista: “ what the heck and the hells was I thinking?!”

I was expecting myself to sew elevated and professional products with primative sewing skills. As I said, they make it look so easy (and primitive) on the internet.

I realized a really important lesson about what I’ll call “the care of craft“. Developing a craft doesn’t happen overnight or even in a few weeks. It can take years to learn a medium and then develop it to make it one’s own. It’s about being willing to evolve the craft as you evolve. It’s something you take care of and nurture because it’s something to which you are devoted.
That is what Meraki means to me.

I have been making greeting cards since elementary school.
And my cards have had hundreds of iterations. I have allowed myself to follow curiosity along the way and let my cards be guided by whatever’s inspiring me at the time. Time just goes away and I’m in the real creative flow when I’m making cards. At this point, making greeting cards comes naturally to me and it is my meaning of Meraki.
I suppose if someone watched me make them, they would think “she makes it look so easy“.

Another thing about one’s craft…because it evolves slowly over time, it is easy for one to discount the power of it to the people who witness the product produced. I know I have often thought that creating my cards is so simple and natural for me. So imposter syndrome sneaks in to say “who do you think you are trying to share/sell your art”. But is at those times that I make space for that part of me in my journal where all my parts get a voice. And I remember that all creatives will at some point have the imposter syndrome rear its head. That’s just resistance showing up to see if you will fight for your dreams or limitations. To what will you be devoted no matter what?

So what it really comes down to is figuring out something you want to dive into and to what medium you want to devote your time and love-not because you think it’s going to make you a lot of money. But instead because it’s something by which you’re inspired. Then, craft becomes something to devote love, time and energy to as it offers you a means of passion, self care and evolution.

Back to these kick ass tshirts: I still want to make them, because I want to wear kick ass T-shirts. Because sewing is now off the table, I have had to open up my mind to what else I could use as a medium.

I’ve always loved paint and so I’m trying my hand at using fabric paint. And I’m really liking the results so far. Learning and being devoted to the medium of paint… Now that sounds right up my alley!
(I’ll just stick with capping my sewing skills at being able to sew on a button.)

3. As I get older, I’m becoming more brave. (Oh geez… this is my first EVER Facebook post. Never thought I could/would do that !)

I’m starting to realize how important it is for me to attempt to do things that I don’t think that I can do. Because what I want for my life is to discover that I can be and do more than my limiting beliefs would tell me otherwise.
It helps that I happen to have people in my life that make me believe that anything is possible and that I’m more capable than I think.
And at the risk of leaving someone out, I won’t mention names, but you know who you are….you there, in my INNER circle.

4. Doing something new can be fun AND an emotional roller coaster AND confronting AND surprising AND exhilarating.

More learning for me ahead, no doubt.

See you soon at the sale, right?
