Rosa Parks is an iconic figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, her courage and determination earning her the name: "The First Lady of Civil Rights".

1. She refused to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus, and was subsequently arrested on December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama.

2. She didn't plan to get arrested. It may be assumed that because Rosa and her husband were a part of the local NAACP chapter, that this was a planned event, but when she got on the bus, she didn't realize until she had already boarded that the driver was a man who had given her issues in the past. When he told her to move, she decided to refuse. “I was not tired physically...No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

3. The Montgomery Bus Boycott started on December 5, in which it is estimated 40,000 African Americans chose to walk to work instead of ride the bus. The boycott lasted 381 days. During that time, Rosa Parks was harassed and sent death threats. She lost her job, and she along with her husband and mother moved to Michigan, where her brother lived. She worked as an aide for Congressman John Conyers, Jr, and lived to be 92 years old. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a catalyst, along with the Brown v. Board of Education decision, for segregation on public transportation to be declared unconstitutional in 1956.

4. She won the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
