Most homeowners don’t think about their home insurance until something forces the conversation.

A renewal notice arrives with a higher price.
A renovation is already finished.
A claim has already happened.

That’s usually when questions start, but by then many decisions are already locked in.

Reviewing your insurance before those moments helps confirm that coverage still fits your home, your household, and how your life looks today. And in many cases, the outcome is simply reassurance that everything is still on track.

Insurance works best when it’s reviewed proactively, not reactively.

Here in Canton and throughout Massachusetts, we often see homeowners paying for insurance that doesn't meet their real needs. It's usually not about price. It's about coverage gaps that people do not realize are there.

A few things to keep in mind when reviewing your home policy:

• Make sure your deductible lines up with your comfort level for repairs
• Ask if your policy is missing discounts you already qualify for
• Not everything is covered automatically, including flood, water backup, and service lines
• Always check for replacement cost on personal property
• Aim for at least $500,000 in liability protection, and consider an umbrella policy if you have savings or assets to protect

The goal is not to spend more. It's to protect your home the right way.

If you are not sure whether your policy has gaps, send us a DM or comment on this post.

This week we were asked, "Help! My neighbor’s tree fell onto my house during a recent windstorm. Will their home insurance cover the repairs?” 🌳💥🏠

Home damage is frustrating. It often means coordinating with contractors and your insurance provider. When you add neighbors to the mix, the whole situation can feel much more complicated.

However, in this situation, it's unlikely the neighbor is responsible for covering the repair costs. In most cases (98% of the time), the responsibility falls on the party where the tree lands. The homeowner will need to contact their own home insurance provider and will be responsible for their policy deductible. If they do not have an active homeowners' insurance, they will need to pay for the repairs out of pocket.

Here are some other tree-related questions we've received in the past:

Q: A tree fell in my yard. Can I file a claim to have the tree removed?
A: Tree removal is not covered by standard home insurance policies.

Q: A tree fell on my car. Is this covered by my car insurance policy?
A: As long as you have comprehensive coverage on your car insurance policy, this would be covered, subject to the deductible. Comprehensive provides coverage for things like fire, theft, vandalism, and Acts of God.
