New York Transit Museum

Do you recognize this landmark? Situated at the intersection of Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue between 71 and 72 Streets, and designed by Heins & LaFarge in the Flemish Renaissance style, this building received landmark status from the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1979.

It's the original entrance to the 72 Street station on the IRT Broadway—Seventh Avenue Line, and it is seen here in this late-1980s photograph.

The 72 Street station was built as one of the first 28 stations of the system. When opened in 1904, the station had narrow platforms and stairways, with no crossovers or crossunders because the control house contained separate turnstiles and token booths for each platform side.

One of the most influential and popular sitcoms of all time, Seinfeld is a quintessentially New York show, except for one major detail: it was filmed in Los Angeles! (Transit fans may notice that the Seinfeld episode “The Subway” uses a fabricated subway car set.)

These 2019 MetroCards promoted weeknight syndication of Seinfeld on WPIX (channel 11) and were accompanied by a “wrapped” subway train meant to look like the interior of Monk’s, the diner that appears the show. The MetroCards feature iconography from Seinfeld’s nine seasons, including the “puffy shirt,” the “big salad,” Fussili Jerry, and many more.
